How Car Shipping Pricing Works

Distance and route

Longer hauls typically cost more in total but less per mile. Routes along high-traffic carrier lanes (major metro to major metro) are usually cheaper than routes to rural or hard-to-reach areas because trucks can fill capacity more easily.

Vehicle size and condition

Larger vehicles like pickups and vans take up more space on a carrier, which increases cost. Inoperable vehicles that don't run or drive require winching equipment and extra handling time, which also adds to the price.

Open vs. enclosed carrier

Open transport is the most common and affordable option—the same type of multi-car trailer used to move new vehicles to dealerships. Enclosed transport shields your vehicle from weather and road debris and costs more due to lower carrier capacity.

Market conditions

Auto transport runs on a spot market. Fuel prices, seasonal demand (like snowbird routes in fall and spring), and how many trucks are currently running your lane all move pricing day to day.

What This Calculator Shows You

This tool pulls the same real-time carrier-market pricing data our team uses to quote live orders, so the number you see is a genuine estimate—not a made-up ballpark. It is not a final, locked-in rate: pricing can shift by the time you book based on carrier availability and market movement.

When you're ready to move forward, request a formal quote. That flow captures your exact vehicle details and pickup window, emails you a saved copy of your quote, and lets you book with $0 due today—your card is only charged after a qualified carrier is assigned and your vehicle is dispatched.

Car Shipping Cost FAQs

How accurate is this car shipping cost calculator?

The price shown comes from the same live carrier-market pricing data our dispatch team uses to quote real orders, plus our brokerage fee. It's a strong estimate, not a locked-in rate—actual pricing can move with fuel costs, seasonality, and carrier availability between now and booking.

Why does the price change between open and enclosed carriers?

Enclosed carriers have less capacity per truck and specialize in higher-value, exotic, and classic vehicles, so rates run higher than open transport. Open transport is the same type of truck you see moving cars to and from dealerships, and it's the better value for most everyday shipments.

Do I need to give my email to see a price?

No. This calculator shows an instant price for your route without requiring contact information. If you decide to move forward, our formal quote flow asks for an email so we can send your saved quote and follow up if pricing changes.

What's included in the price shown here?

The estimate includes the carrier's transport rate plus AAAT's brokerage coordination fee. It does not include optional add-ons like guaranteed pickup dates, which can be added later at checkout for an extra fee.

Why did some routes show "instant price unavailable"?

A small number of routes or vehicle combinations don't return an automated rate from our pricing data provider. When that happens, request a formal quote and a dispatcher will price the route manually, usually within one business day.

Is this the final price I'll pay?

It's an estimate based on current market conditions. Your official quote—generated in the formal quote flow—reflects pricing at that moment, and for online bookings we save your card but charge $0 until a qualified carrier is assigned and your vehicle is dispatched.
